InkSpell: The Movie? (Events in InkHeart)

Sun Sep 20, 2009, 11:20 PM
InkSpell: An Motion Picture of the Sequel of InkHeart?

InkHeart, a timeless tale about novels, about imagination, about life. InkHeart, which it was also known as Tintenherz in German, is also a New York Times Bestseller, along with USA Today bestseller. InkHeart was also written by an creative author name Cornelia Funke, which it was written originally in German, translated by an editor name Authea Bell. Cornelia also has written The Thief Lord and Dragon Rider, which they were also bestsellers. I have read Dragon Rider and it was also an great fantasy novel, it was cute because it was about friendship but I loved it. I would love to read The Thief Lord. But as you all know already, I’ve read InkHeart back in my middle school years and I say for myself to all of you, InkHeart has got to be one of the greatest fantasy novels to ever get lost in. This great novel is about an family of three name Mortimer, Theresa, and Meggie Folchart. When Meggie was just an child, about three years old, her father, who is an bookbinder, would use to read to her and his wife, who would draw pictures and also draw pictures of her memories. However one fateful night, Mo begins to read aloud InkHeart to Resa and Meggie. What he didn’t know is that, he is one of the few readers in the world who have an rare and unique magical ability to read characters out of novels by simply reading the words aloud. Then, as he continue to read, an evil ruler name Capricorn appeared out of the story of InkHeart into reality. Not only he has read an evil ruler out of InkHeart but he also read Basta, one of Capricorn’s devoted henchmen and Dustfinger, an fire-eater who is also known as the fire dancer. But as he found out that people who have this rare magical ability to read characters out of novels, someone has to go take their place back in the novel. Sadly, It was too late when Mo’s beloved wife who is now in the pages of InkHeart. Many years later, as Meggie was now twelve years old, on a raining night, Dustfinger has come to their home tell Slivertounge, Mortimer’s another name due to his ability, that Capricorn has come to find what Mo has in his possession. Mo, Meggie, and Dustfinger begin their adventure, an adventure that Meggie have read about in novels. An magical adventure between reality and fantasy that will change her life forever. I hope this is an good introduction of the story about InkHeart for those that haven’t read about it. There is many other information I would love to tell you but however, that would be considered an spoiler, right? *Laughs* I remember I’ve finished reading this wondrous novel and I enjoyed reading InkHeart so much! But when I found out that a few years later that it was going to become an motion picture of InkHeart, I was even more excited! Of course, I have read the novel again to refresh my memory and I went to go see the movie with my sister and her friend about 2 or 3 days after the movie was released in theaters. I had a wonderful time watching the movie as there was very humorous scenes as well. But of course, as films that are based on novels, they indeed cut and added scenes in the motion picture. For all the viewers that haven’t watched the movie or read the novel, I’m going to type some scenes that were in the novel that was different from the movie. So, you can continue to read at your own risk. I may not remember ALL the scenes but I’ll type what I remember:

InkHeart: The Novel V.S InkHeart: The Motion Picture

*Thanks to an friend on DeviantART, Dustfinger uses matches in the novel. However, in the film,
Dustfinger would use his hands and fire would appear in his hands.

*The beginning of the novel, Dustfinger makes his first appearance in Mo’s home and then he would tell Mo about Capricorn. In the film, Dustfinger first appearance at the book fair when Meggie saw Gwin, Dustfinger’s pet that is an horned marten who plays an deadly part of his story in InkHeart. Mo read an paragraph about him and Gwin. Dustfinger also pleaded Mo to read him back to InkHeart and then, he told Mo about Capricorn.

*In the novel, Dustfinger went with Mo, Meggie to Elinor’s home after the visit. Also, Elinor is an aunt of Resa. However in the film, Mo and Meggie drove away from the book fair as they ran away from Dustfinger. Mo refused to read Dustfinger back in InkHeart because of what happen to his beloved wife.

*In the novel, they all drove to Capricorn’s village as Elinor was the driver. In the Film, Capricorn’s men broke into Elinor’s home to get Meggie, Mo, and Elinor as Dustfinger told Capricorn where they were at because Mo once again wouldn’t read him back to InkHeart.

* In the novel, after they have arrived there, they saw Basta and the rest of Capricorn’s men and Mo, Meggie, Elinor, and Dustfinger follow them to Capricorn’s church. In the film, after Capricorn’s men burned all of Elinor’s precious and valuable books and messed up her home, they took them as they drove to the village and as they arrived, they met Capricorn in his throne room.

*In the novel, Capricorn’s men all wore black suits. But Basta wore a white shirt with a red flower in the button hole of his jacket, red flower like an warning. Capricorn’s dressing gown was red. In the film, Capricorn and his men just wore black suits.

*In the novel, They arrived in Capricorn’s church as Capricorn saw Meggie, Mo, Elinor, and Dustfinger as he sat upon his throne. Mortola, Capricorn’s mother, was cutting his toenails. In the film, Mortola was just right beside standing near Capricorn as she served him a drink in a wine glass.

*In the Novel, As Mo read Treasure Island, gold, sliver, and copper coins appeared out of the story, along with an emerald green lizard that emerged from a heap of tiny coins. There was also sand on the floor from the story as it blew softly from the wind in the novel and the film. However, In the film, just gold coins appeared out of the story as it rained golden coins from the ceiling.

*In the novel, when Mo read Tales of the Arabian Nights, after when Farid appeared out of the story, one of Capricorn’s men name Fulvio has been taken the place for Farid in Farid’s story as Capricorn demanded him back. However in the Film, the same event happen but Capricorn didn’t care who went back in the story.

*In the novel, the author of InkHeart in the novel of InkHeart, Fenoglio had grandchildren name Paula and Pippo and they were all making chocolate cake. In the film, It was just only him that was making chocolate cake before Mo and Meggie went knocking on his door of where he lived.

*In the novel, back when they went to Capricorn’s church, Cockrell, one of Capricorn’s men said an comment to them. He said; “Welcome to the devil‘s house.” And Flatnose, also one of Capricorn’s men replied to Cockrell’s comment saying it was bad luck for saying that. He was also the one that was talking to Capricorn at the Church as he bowed many times to him. In the film, Cockrell didn’t say such thing or didn‘t bow at all.

*In the novel, When Mo, Meggie, Dustfinger, Farid, and Elinor escaped the village, Elinor was the one driving her vehicle but when things have gotten worst, her car broke down so they had to flee by foot. In the film, They all took the vehicle that Capricorn’s men drove when they first arrived in Capricorn’s village. Before, Mo read an paragraph from Wizard of Oz to bring the tornado in reality to distract Capricorn’s men so they won’t get captured and they safely went where Fenoglio lived. Mo was driving.

*In the novel, Basta and Flatnose were ordered by Capricorn to find them and they brought black dogs to help them track them down as they knew the others were on foot. Then, later on as Meggie and Fenoglio was at his own home, they found Meggie and Fenoglio in his house, along with his grandchildren. In the film, Basta and Flatnose found Fenoglio and Meggie as Fenoglio opened the door and told him everything about Mo, Dustfinger, and Farid where they were at and it was only Meggie and Fenoglio.

*In the novel, Elinor did go to help Mo, Dustfinger, Farid, and Meggie when they were back at Capricorn’s village as first she went back home. She saw her burned novels that Capricorn’s men have caused. She went back with the police. Of course, at first they didn’t believe her story until one of them mention about a village uphill which it was of course Capricorn’s village. In the film, Elinor wanted to go back to her home but instead, as she was at the train station, she went back to Capricorn’s village alone to help everyone.

*In the ending of the novel, this was when after Mo found out that her wife was at the village the whole time but working for Mortola and she couldn’t talk because she was read half out of the novel, thanks to Darius, who is also has an magical ability to read characters out from their stories. He was formerly Capricorn’s reader but now friends with Elinor and the others as he helps her with her library. Sadly, he damages them if he stutters over the words. But anyways, Resa is united with her husband and daughter but she didn’t have her voice. As they all went back to Elinor’s home, Dustfinger and Farid went on their own journey to find another reader with the magical ability to read Dustfinger back to his beloved home in InkHeart. In the ending of the film, Resa’s voice is back and she is united with her husband and daughter. Mo finally has read Dustfinger back to his home in InkHeart, where he has his own family there as well and Farid kept Gwin so Dustfinger won’t die in his story. Farid stays with Meggie and her family, as he also has an soft spot for Meggie as well. *Blushes* I thought that was so cute! ^/////^

*In the novel, I forgot to mention, Meggie reads Fenoglio, as she now has the same magical gift like her father, to his own story InkHeart in the novel of InkHeart. But I’m not sure or not but I think he leaves his grandchildren behind. In the film, Meggies just reads Fenoglio to his own story.

This is all the scenes that I can remember, I hope I have helped you. If I missed any other scenes, I’ll make sure to update this journal entry. There is another scene that I think happened in the novel but I’m not sure if it is true but I think I remember that Meggie reads Peter Pan and Tinkerbell appears out of the story and the Tin Man solider from another story. I also don’t know If Fenoglio’s grandchildren is being taken care of or not. But overall, It was an great fantasy movie in my option that made 17,281,832 at the box office. Yeah, when I went to the movie theater with my sister and her friend, there wasn’t a lot of people there when I went but I still loved it.
But it leads to an important question: Will they film InkSpell? I sure hope they do! Sadly, I haven’t finished reading InkSpell, since I’m only in chapter 33. *Sweatdrops* But don’t worry, I’ll start reading more and I hope I won’t be extremely busy, though. If New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures do indeed film the sequel to InkHeart, I will be the first one there to watch it in theaters! I’ll even go to the midnight showing If they ever have one! *Laughs* I’ll dress up as Cockrell If they do which by the way I’m dressing up as him for Halloween. I’m assuming this movie would either be good as the first or even better than the first movie because this movie is based when Meggie, Farid, Dustfinger, Mo, and Resa go to the InkWorld in InkHeart!! I can’t wait! Recently, I also read on Wikipedia that New York Times said that they ARE filming InkSpell but I don’t know yet.
Well, That is it for now! Thanks for reading this special journal entry and when I’m done reading InkSpell and I begin to start reading InkDeath, which that is the last novel of the InkHeart trilogy, I’ll type another journal entry and type what happens in InkSpell and what you will be expecting in the film. Please, have a wonderful day and tune in next time! I’m Ember Yami and I have typed a tribute of my favorite novel InkHeart, written by Cornelia Funke.
